Methods of Evaluation


  1. Completion of all assigned personal perspective projects including preparatory sketches. Evaluation will include originality, relevance to assigned theme, as well as technical proficiency.
  2. Evaluation of the creative process of preliminary sketches from compiled notebooks and photo references as they pertain to all assigned projects. Evaluation will include originality, relevance to assigned theme, as well as technical proficiency.
  3. Class and individual critiques of final project based on evaluations of quality, technique, and creativity based on themes as well as the materials and supplies utilized.
  4. Written and oral reports on assigned class readings explaining the relevance of historical and contemporary aspects of painting.

Course Objectives

  • Prepare professional acrylic painting surfaces in a mixed media approach.
  • Develop themes on their work both realistic and non-objective.
  • Utilize the elements and principles of design through various thematic projects.
  • Explore a range of color and technical variations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the creative process, pertaining to the development of an individual sense of originality and style
  • Develop a basic studio through ongoing purchases of essential art materials.
  • Compare and contrast works of art from a global perspective.
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of color theory
  • Demonstrate safe, competent handling of materials
  • Develop expressive content through manipulation of mark, color, value and composition

CSLOs

  • Produce advanced acrylic painting techniques to create a variety of paintings that draw from an objective point of view using still-lifes and photographs as well as from the imagination. This will include the development of an original body of work.

  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the creative process in the development of an original body of work.

  • Execute a series of paintings that explores a range of color theories as well as a technical and conceptual theme uniting their artwork.

  1. Prepare professional acrylic painting surfaces in a mixed media approach.
    1. Construction of flexible and rigid supports for acrylic paint media
    2. Preparation of cotton and veneer surfaces
    3. Experimentation with textured surfaces
  2. Develop themes on their work both realistic and non-objective.
    1. Explore and experiment with depictions of the figure.
    2. Explore and experiment with abstraction.
  3. Utilize the elements and principles of design through various thematic projects.
    1. Practice the elements of design such as line, space, form, color and texture through various advanced projects.
    2. Practice the principles of design such as rhythm, balance, scale, emphasis and unity through various advanced projects.
    3. Analyze the use of the above elements and principles in paintings in both written and oral critiques
  4. Explore a range of color and technical variations.
    1. Study color through advanced exercises and applications.
    2. Utiize masking techniques
    3. Develop skills in the use of medium with glazes, washes, impasto textures, painted hard edges (taped) and spattering techniques
