Course Description
Introduction to the performance of music for guitar ensemble, emphasizing sight reading, rhythmic accuracy and ensemble skills. Music from the 15th century to the present will be rehearsed and performed. Topics may include: Music written for guitar orchestras, transcriptions from orchestral scores, transcriptions for guitar duos, trios and quartets, as well as modern music using contemporary rhythmic and melodic concepts and alternative performance techniques (prepared guitar, percussion, extended glissandi).

This course enables guitarist music majors to complete their ensemble performance transfer or degree requirement on their major instrument and provides valuable college ensemble experience that is commonplace for other instrumentalists.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate the ability to listen and adjust to a conductor and ensemble
  • Demonstrate the ability to use interpretive tools effectively

  • Learn, rehearse, and publicly perform selected repertoire from the Guitar Orchestra and ensemble literature found in various time periods from the Baroque Era to the present.

  • Participate in the art of performing in a guitar ensemble by demonstrating correct technique, phrasing, balance, dynamics, and tone quality.

Outline


  1. Demonstrate basic music sight reading ability
    1. sight read in the first position in keys with up to three sharps or two flats
    2. learn and play music in higher positions
  2. Perform beginning-level ensemble repertoire and/or accompaniment parts
    1. use proper techniques for bass-line and chordal accompaniment
    2. play simple melodic passages using proper techniques for both legato and staccato articulations
  3. Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy
    1. clap basic guitar parts with rhythmic accuracy at sight
    2. learn more complex rhythms
  4. Demonstrate the ability to listen and adjust to a conductor and ensemble
    1. follow conducting patterns and cues
    2. maintain and/or adjust tempos as necessary
  5. Demonstrate the ability to use interpretive tools effectively
    1. blend with sections as needed by adjusting volume levels or tone color
    2. create special effects such as sharp accents, golpe and the use of "preparations" (objects inserted between strings, etc.)

Lab Topics


  1. Students will rehearse assigned guitar orchestra repertoire in large groups and sectionals
  2. Students will rehearse small guitar ensemble repertoire
  3. Students will practice sight reading at appropriate level, including music in higher positions and/or with up to three sharps or flats
