Course Description
Continuation of Guitar Ensemble I, emphasizing sight-reading at higher positions, greater accuracy at increased tempos and/or rhythms, and ensemble skills. Music from the 15th century to the present will be rehearsed and performed.

This course, for the intermediate ensemble guitarist, enables music majors to complete their ensemble performance transfer or degree requirement on their major instrument and provides valuable college ensemble experience that is commonplace for other instrumentalists.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives


Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate intermediate-level music reading ability
  • Perform intermediate-level ensemble repertoire and/or accompaniment parts written for guitar orchestras, transcriptions from orchestral scores, transcriptions for guitar duos, trios and, modern music
  • Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy
  • Demonstrate the ability to listen and adjust to a conductor and ensemble
  • Demonstrate the ability to use interpretive tools effectively

CSLOs

  • Learn, rehearse, and publicly perform selected repertoire from the Guitar Orchestra and ensemble literature found in various time periods from the Renaissance Era to the present.

  • Participate in the art of performing in a guitar ensemble by demonstrating correct technique, phrasing, balance, dynamics, and tone quality.

Outline


  1. Demonstrate intermediate-level music reading ability
    1. sight read music in the second through fifth positions in keys with up to three sharps or two flats
    2. learn and play music in higher positions
  2. Perform intermediate-level ensemble repertoire and/or accompaniment parts written for guitar orchestras, transcriptions from orchestral scores, transcriptions for guitar duos, trios and, modern music
    1. use contemporary rhythmic and melodic concepts and alternative performance techniques (prepared guitar, percussion, extended glissandi)
    2. use proper techniques for bass-line, chordal and arpeggio accompaniment and melody
  3. Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy
    1. clap intermediate-level guitar parts with rhythmic accuracy at sight
    2. learn and play music with rhythmic complexity including tuplets and syncopation
  4. Demonstrate the ability to listen and adjust to a conductor and ensemble
    1. follow conducting patterns and cues
    2. maintain and/or adjust tempos as necessary
  5. Demonstrate the ability to use interpretive tools effectively
    1. blend with sections as needed by adjusting volume levels or tone color
    2. perform various articulations and techniques as needed, such as ascending and descending ligados, glissandi, pizzicato and ponticello

Lab Topics


  1. Students will practice sight reading music in the second through fifth positions in keys with up to three sharps or two flats, as well as music in higher positions
  2. Students will practice contemporary rhythmic and melodic concepts and alternative performance techniques (prepared guitar, percussion, extended glissandi), as well as proper techniques for bass-line, chordal and arpeggio accompaniment and melody
  3. Students will rehearse guitar orchestra music as both full group and sectionals
  4. Students will rehearse guitar ensemble music
