Course Description
This course is an early-intermediate level study of the common practices used in jazz, blues and selected styles of popular music. Guitar styles from the 1940s to the present will be examined through the use of recording and written examples. Chord voicing, scales, right hand picking techniques, and development of solo skills in these styles will be emphasized.

This course meets a general education requirement for °®¶¹´«Ã½, CSUGE and IGETC. It belongs on the Music AA degree. This course offers instruction in jazz, blues, and popular guitar. The skills taught in this course are used in the majority of popular music with guitar and are not taught in traditional classical guitar courses.

  2. Preparation for, and participation in, in-class exercises, evaluated on ongoing basis, including accuracy of rhythmic execution, notes and fingering; proper playing techniques; proper application of scales, chord progression and phrase construction in solo performance
  3. Midterm and final examinations to assess conceptual understanding of learned materials as well as applied skill acquisition

  1. Perform various song forms used in blues, jazz and popular music forms
    1. Basic twelve bar blues form
    2. Thirty-two bar song form
    3. Selected jazz and popular music forms
  2. Demonstrate conceptual knowledge and application of scale forms
    1. Major
    2. Minor and dorian
    3. Mixolydian
    4. Pentatonic
    5. Blues
  3. Demonstrate conceptual knowledge and application of chord voicings
    1. Major, minor, augmented, diminished and 7th chords, both strummed and arpeggiated
    2. Harmonic extensions (9ths, 11ths, and 13ths)
    3. Moveable chords--5th and 6th-string root major and minor 7th, 9th, and other extended harmonies
  4. Perform various techniques for playing both lead and accompaniment
    1. Right hand picking techniques including pickstyle alternate picking and fingerstyle techniques
    2. Develop solos in all styles using four bar phrases
    3. Rhythm guitar patterns in various styles, including bossa nova and other Latin styles
