Course Description
This course is an individualized study of the appropriate techniques and repertoire for the specific instrument or voice being studied. Emphasis is on the progressive development of skills needed for solo performance. Achievement is evaluated through a juried performance. The laboratory will include activities such as individual one on one music instruction and group meetings, as well as faculty-supervised on-campus practice. This course requires technical command of the instrument and basic knowledge of musicianship.

This course provides individual instruction in solo vocal and instrumental techniques and performance. This course is transferable to CSU and UC. It belongs on the Liberal Arts A.A. degree and prepares students for university auditions and public performance.

Outline


  1. Acquire performance skills.
    1. Rhythmic accuracy and articulation
    2. Fingering, hand and bow positions, embouchure
    3. Mental concepts of correct tonal production including diaphragmatic breathing
    4. Develop accurate intonation skills
    5. Develop strong, regular practice habits and repertoire preparation
    6. For singers, use diction appropriate to language and style
    7. For singers, solos in a minimum of three languages selected from English, Italian, German, Latin, Spanish, or French is expected
    8. For jazz singers or instrumentalists, perform improvised solos as applicable
  2. Recognize and apply performance requirements of various historical/stylistic periods
