Some of this drive stems from the desire to enable our students to be better-informed citizens of our increasingly crowded world, while some of it comes from the faculty's desire to draw the students into the sheer fascination of the Earth's dynamism and complexity. In terms of concrete educational goals, the departments mission is to give students an opportunity to successfully complete science coursework for transfer, Associate degree, or lifelong learning. Transfer is the primary goal of most Geology students, and the department expects to provide students with an opportunity to earn transferable general education credits. This outcome applies to the majority of the students in Geology 10 and 20, with smaller fractions of them taking the class for the A.A. Degree, personal interest, or lifelong learning. You may create a new one or copy from your 2008-09 comprehensive program review.I.A What is the primary mission of your program?TransferBasic Skills, Transfer. At that time, the number of students from targeted populations was 74. This increased to 154 in 2010-11, 200 in 11-12, and 225 in 2012-13. Success rates among students from the targeted populations has remained steady at 65% +/1% for the last three years.Briefly, address student success data relative to your program growth or decline in targeted populations (Latina/o, African Ancestry, Pacific Islander, Filipino) refer to the sites: (Program reviews 2008-09 through 2012-13 available at: HYPERLINK "http://deanza.edu/gov/IPBT/program_review_files.html" http://deanza.edu/gov/IPBT/program_review_files.html )II.A.2 Trends in equity gap:The equity gap remained roughly the same in the Geology department. The trend from 10-11 through 12-13 was toward a slight increase in the difference between the percent success rates of the targeted and non-targeted populations. (14% to 15% to 17%). Reasons for changes in the equity gap are probably manifold and complex. Some of the trends noted above may be due to challenges faced by the College in providing student support services during the difficult budgetary times of the last several years. Refer to HYPERLINK "http://www.deanza.edu/president/EducationalMasterPlan2010-2015Final.pdf" http://www.deanza.edu/president/EducationalMasterPlan2010-2015Final.pdf , p.16. Briefly address why this has occurred.II.A.3 Closing the student equity gap:In the Comprehensive Program Review for 2008-2009, the Geology department pointed out that student tutoring has the potential to aid in closing the student equity gap. However, as pointed out in that Program Review document, the primary tutorial service for Geology has historically been when individual students volunteer to lead Adjunct Study Skills sections. The department is examining strategies to recruit qualified Student Instructors for these classes, particularly from groups identified by the college as the targeted populations. What progress or achievement has the program made relative to the plans stated in your programs 2008 -09 Comprehensive Program Review, Section III.B, towards decreasing the student equity gap? See IPBT website for past program review documentation: HYPERLINK "http://deanza.edu/gov/IPBT/program_review_files.html" http://deanza.edu/gov/IPBT/program_review_files.html If a rationale for your strategies was not stated in the 2008-2009 CPR, then briefly explain now. II. A.4.a.Plan if success rate of program is below 60%Course success rates for 2010-11 through 2012-13 are well above 60%. (The overall success rate increased from 81% in 10-11 to 83% in 12-13.)In accordance with ACCJC requirements, the college has adopted an institutional standard for successful course completion at or above 60% HYPERLINK "http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf" http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf If course success rates in your program fall below 60%, what are the departments plans to bring course success rates up to this level?II. A.4.b. Plan if success rate of ethnic group(s) is below 60%Success rates for the targeted groups have remained above 60% from 2010-11 through 2012-13. (Specifically, in all three years they have been 65% +/- 1%.) In accordance with ACCJC requirements, the college has adopted an institutional standard for successful course completion at or above 60% HYPERLINK "http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf" http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf Are success rates by ethnicity at or above 60%, if not, what are the departments plans to bring the success rates of the ethnic group(s) up to this level?II. A.4.c.Resources needed to reach institutional standardIn accordance with ACCJC requirements, the college has adopted an institutional standard for successful course completion at or above 60% HYPERLINK "http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf" http://www.deanza.edu/ir/deanza-research-projects/2012_13/ACCJC_IS.pdf What resources may you need to bring the success rates of the program or ethnic group(s) up to the institutional standard?II.A.5 Overall growth/decline in # students:When the Foothill and ý Geology departments were consolidated at ý in Fall 2009, overall enrollment increased significantly. This was due to the addition of a full-time faculty member and a concomitant increase in the number of class sections, as well as the introduction of Oceanography classes. The overall enrollment increased from 365 (08-09), when the department had only one full-time instructor and one part-time instructor, to a high of 659 in 10-11. The last two years have seen a decrease to an overall enrollment of 575. In Winter 2014, the full-time faculty in the Geology and Astronomy departments met to plan a yearly schedule that coordinates the efforts of both departments, and which can be repeated from year to year. A major goal of this effort was to reorganize the way the Geology 10 (Introductory Geology) class is taught. Beginning in Fall 2014, the large Geology 10 `day class will return to a single-instructor format. The class was taught in this fashion prior to Fall 2009, and filled consistently when taught that way.Briefly address the overall enrollment growth or decline of a comparison between all student populations and their success.II.B Changes imposed by internal/external regulations The Geology department is poised to help the College meet its goal of increasing the number of Transfer AA degrees. After being contacted by representatives of the Academic Senate about Transfer Model Curricula, the Geology department has a simple plan for putting a Geology Transfer AA degree in place. This will be easy to do; it involves creating one required course (Geology 11, Historical Geology). A Transfer Model Curriculum for community college geology programs has already been created at the state level. Budget cuts have meant that the Geology department can no longer hire buses for the required Geology 10 field trip. Students are now required to drive themselves on the field trip that is required for articulation.Address program changes implemented as a response to changes in College/District policy, state laws, division/department/program level requirements or external agencies regulations? How did the change(s) affect your program? (e.g. any curriculum, program reorganization, staffing etc.)II. C Progress in Main Areas of ImprovementThe main item cited in the 08-09 `Main Areas for Improvement' was the modernization of the Geology laboratory facilities. Significant parts of this plan have been completed. For example, the teaching laboratory (room S-15) has recently been upgraded to `smart classroom standard. Additionally, laptop computers were purchased for the Geology laboratory, and are regularly used by students to access and evaluate Earth-science data in the Geology courses. Additional teaching materials and equipment have been requested through the Measure C request process.Based on the 2008-09 Comprehensive Program Review, Section I.C. "Main Areas for Improvement", briefly address your program's progress in moving towards assessment or planning or current implementation of effective solutions.II. D CTE Programs: Impact of External Trends:Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, provide regional, state, and labor market data, employment statistics, please see "CTE Program Review Addenda" at: www.deanza.edu/gov/IPBT/resources.html Identify any significant trends that may affect your program relative to: 1) Curriculum Content; 2) Future plans for your program e.g. enrollment management plans.II. E CTE Programs: Advisory Board Input:Career Technical Education (CTE), provide recommendations from this year's Advisory Board (or other groups outside of your program, etc.) Briefly, address any significant recommendations from the group. State course, SLO statement, enhancement and reason for choosing this enhancement. If none, write NONE.IV. A Budget TrendsCollege-wide budget reductions have forced a change in the field trips required for articulation. Whereas the Geology department was formerly able to hire buses for the field trips, the students are now forced to drive their own vehicles. As part of the College-wide effort to reduce printing expenses, the department has moved all handouts and lab exercises either to the Web or to lab manuals and reading packets that are printed on campus and sold through the Bookstore. It is still necessary to print exams, however.Assess the impact of external or internal funding trends upon the program and/or its ability to serve its students. If you dont work with Budget, please ask your Division Dean to give you the information. IV.B Enrollment TrendsAs noted in section II.A.5, above, during the period 08-09 through 10-11, two changes in the department probably led to an increase in enrollment: 1) Consolidation with the Foothill College Geology program, which began in the 09-10 school year, and the return of one of the Geology faculty members from PDL at the beginning of the 10-11 school year. A decline occurred from 10-11 to 12-13, from 659 enrolled to 575 enrolled. To try and increase enrollment, the Geology schedule has been revamped for 2014-2015, so that the largest class, a 90-person class with 3 lab sections, will once again be taught entirely by one instructor at a time. During the interval 1998-2009, this class had steady, generally full enrollment when taught in this way. Steps are also being taken, particularly in the Oceanography program, to re-examine and re-tool aspects of the Geology 20 courses, to work towards increasing enrollment.Assess the impact of external or internal funding changes upon the programs enrollment and/or its ability to serve its students. If you dont work with Enrollment Trends, please ask your Division Dean to give you the information.V. A.8 Facility JustificationAll classes in S-15 will use this facility.Who will use this facility? What would the impact be on the program with or without the facility? What is the life expectancy of the current facility? How does the request promote the college mission or strategic goals? Etc. V.B.1 Budget AugmentationBudget for copying of Exams and Quizzes: Like most other departments, the Geology department has moved its greensheets and laboratory handouts online. Exams and quizzes remain the only items that need to be copied for distribution in class. It is hoped that despite the end of materials fees, funds can be found to enable the copying of exam materials. If B budget funds become available, the department will be able to replace samples and equipment that get worn out from frequent use by large numbers of students who are taking lab courses in order to meet CSUGE and IGETC transfer GE requirements. How much? Who/what could be supported if this additional funding was awarded? What would the impact be on the program with or without the funds? How does the request promote the college mission or strategic goals? If you do not deal with the B budget directly, you can use the comment: please refer to the Deans summary.V.B.2 Staff Development NeedsWhat assessment led to this request?
